Reduce Thunderbird Memory Usage |

If you leave Thunderbird on all day then this 'hack' is for you. The same tweak for Firefox has been widely publicised all over the place. That tweak moves some of Firefox's data to the page file when it is minimized, which reduces the RAM usage. This can be very effective if your system is low on memory. However, it has been noticed that restoring/maximizing Firefox can be slower as it has to fetch the data from the hard disc again. We can also use this tweak in Thunderbird.
Personally, I don't have much use for this, as Firefox is open and in use almost all the time my machine is on, and when its not I close the window. On the other hand, I do see the same tweak being useful with Thunderbird. I tend to leave it on all day, so I can read emails straight away.
I would recommend using this tweak along with MinimizeToTray (can be found here), this extension for Firefox as well as Thunderbird minimizes the window to the system tray instead of the taskbar. This effectively hides Thunderbird until an email is received (an alert pops up to notify you).
Onto the actual tweak: (it has been tested on Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5 and 2.0 on Windows XP)
Remember to back up your Mail and preferences (go to X:\Documents and Settings\[USERNAME]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles and copy the xxxxxxxx.default folder, you may need to show hidden files and folders, x=any number/letter) - In Thunderbird, go to Tools > Options and choose the Advanced tab.
- Click the button next to Advanced Configuration labelled Config Editor.
- This brings up a similar window to Firefox's about:config page, right click on some white space and choose New Boolean.
- Enter config.trim_on_minimize as the preference name and select true as the value.
- Close this window and restart Thunderbird.
Now you can open Task manager and find the thunderbird.exe process, note the memory usage and minimize the Thunderbird window. Does the memory usage drastically reduce? Good you've successfully reduced the memory usage of Thunderbird.
The memory usage will creep back up, but I find that it never gets as high as it did before implementing this tweak. If you want to reduce its memory again, restore and minimize again.

New content also includes siege vehicles and destructible buildings and a new player-vs.-player battleground, Strand of the Ancients.
Some of the new features are already in the game. Talent trees, in which players assign points to customize their skills, already show talents to level 80. The skills, however, will not be available unless you buy the expansion.
Another new feature added in a recent update is the achievement system, which tracks accomplishments from the number of fish caught (yes, you can fish in WoW) and number of recipes learned (you can cook, too. I am a Chef de Partie, having learned 75 recipes).
The expansion, which requires both the “World of Warcraft” base game and the “Burning Crusade” expansion released two years ago, will launch with a suggested retail price of $39.99.
