Devices such as mobile phones, the PSP, or 5th Generation iPod have video playback. However, you need to have your videos in .mp4 or .3gp format to view them.

 

Most people will store their videos in .wmv or .avi (XviD or DivX) format, so they will need to be converted in order to view them on the device. There are lots of software solutions around to do this but I have found that 3GP Converter is adequate, with no install and very little configuration or set up.

3GP Converter will convert .avi XviD/DivX, .wmv and .mpg into mp4 and 3gpp for a number of devices.

• Unzip the folder, and double click on the setup.exe file. Most likely you will see a list of garbage characters (this is Japanese, but it wont appear on non-Japanese computers).

 

The converter isn't that slow, but it doesn't use both/all cores if you have a multi-core processor. I don't think there is currently any way to implement this with 3GP Converter.

If you want to convert to a different format, rerun the setup.exe file and select a new file type. As the program is so small, I have multiple occurrences of the program for different file types.

For PSP owners:
The converted video will have two files, the .mp4 file and and a .thm file (this file is simply a thumbnail of the video, which is used on the PSP). The files will be named the same with different extensions. You must not change the names of the videos (they will be M4Vxxxxx.mp4 .thm, where x are numbers).
Place both the files in the MP_ROOT\100MNV01 folder in the PSP memory stick. You can view the video from Video > Memory Stick from the Home Menu.

For iPod owners:
You will have one .mp4 file named whatever you want. The easiest way to get these on your iPod is to drag the files into iTunes, and sync videos with the iPod.

For phone owners:
You will have a .3gp file, copy this to the correct folder on your phones memory card. This is usually something like Videos, or Movies. It shouldn't be too hard to find if you hunt through the file tree.
Alternatively, if you have bluetooth on your PC and phone, you can send the files that way.
